How Do You Change a Car Battery?

It’s actually quite easy to change a car battery and get you back out onto the Marshall roads. Therefore, it’s important to know how to disconnect and install a car battery. Let’s check out this helpful guide that lays out the process step by step:

Disconnecting Your Old Battery

  • Place the car in park, shut the engine off, and apply the parking brake.
  • Locate the battery, which is usually near the front of the engine.
  • Disconnect the negative (-) cable, while making sure you don’t hit the positive and negative terminals at the same time.
  • Next, you can disconnect the positive (+) cable using the same process.
  • If there’s a compartment holding the battery in place, be sure to remove this also.
  • Once the old battery is disconnected, be sure to recycle it. You can exchange it at a trusted dealership for a new one. Do not throw the battery in the trash.

Connecting the New Battery

  • If there is any type of corrosion or debris, use a wire brush to clear the connectors.
  • Place the battery in the compartment.
  • First, attach the positive (+) cable.
  • You can then attach the negative (-) cable. Ensure you install the positive cable first to avoid any electric shocks or shorts.
  • Make sure the engine starts.
